Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 30, 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how Babel ("the app", "we", "us"), a mobile application by kodmap, handles information when you use it on iOS and Android (com.kodmap.aichatbot). Babel is an AI assistant for chatting, translating and writing.
The short version. You do not sign up: Babel creates an anonymous account for your install (a random ID — no name, no email, no password). Your chats are stored on your phone, not on our servers. To write a reply, the message you send — with the recent part of that chat — goes through our server to the AI provider of the model you picked (OpenAI, Anthropic or Google); our server does not keep the text. We keep your token balance and a usage record (which model, how many tokens, when). Subscriptions are handled by Apple / Google and RevenueCat. Usage analytics and crash reports go to Google Firebase, and you can turn them off with Share usage data in Settings. Babel shows no ads, uses no advertising identifier and does not sell your data. Each point is described below.
1. Information we process
- Your chats, translations and phrasebook — stored only on your device. Deleting chat history in Settings, or uninstalling the app, removes them. They are not backed up to our servers and do not move to a new phone.
- What you send to the AI — the text of the message you send, together with the recent part of the same chat (so the model has context), and the instructions of any template, writing tool or tone you chose. See section 2.
- Anonymous account, balance and usage — see section 3.
- Purchases — see section 4.
- Usage analytics and crash reports — via Google Firebase. See section 5.
- Push-notification token — see section 6.
- Your settings — default model, translation languages, read-aloud and similar choices, stored on your device.
2. Messages and AI providers
To answer you, Babel sends your message to an AI model. The request goes from the app to our server (Google Cloud Functions, operated by kodmap on Google Cloud), which adds our instructions and forwards it to the provider of the model you chose:
- OpenAI (GPT models),
- Anthropic (Claude models), or
- Google (Gemini models).
The provider processes the text to generate the reply and handles it under its own API terms and privacy policy. We send the providers no name, email or account details of yours. You agree to this when you start Babel ("I agree that my messages are sent to these AI providers"). Do not put passwords, card numbers, health details or other secrets in a message.
Our server does not store the content of your messages or of the replies. It records only what it needs to charge and run the service: the model, token counts, the kind of request (chat, translate, template, tool, camera, share) and timing. Operational logs on Google Cloud are kept for 30 days.
Conversation memory. In long chats, the oldest messages fall out of what is sent each time. If conversation memory is turned on, our server keeps a short summary of those older messages for that chat so Babel can still refer to them. The summary is encrypted (AES-256-GCM) with a key derived from the chat's own messages, so it cannot be read unless your app sends that chat again; it is deleted automatically after 30 days, and immediately when you delete your account. Plain-text messages are never stored.
Camera and photos. When you point the camera at text or choose a photo, the text is recognised on your phone. Only the recognised text you choose to send is sent, as a message; the photo itself is never sent.
Voice. Speaking instead of typing uses your phone's speech recognition (Apple Speech on iOS — on the device when the phone supports it, otherwise Apple's service; Google's speech service on Android). Only the resulting text is sent as a message. Reading replies aloud uses your phone's built-in voices.
Text shared from other apps. When you share text to Babel or choose "Translate with Babel", that text is handled like a message you type.
3. Anonymous account, balance and device check
When you first open Babel, the app creates an anonymous Firebase Authentication account. In our database (Google Cloud Firestore) we keep, for that account: your token balance and its parts (daily, welcome bonus, subscription), the usage and purchase records described above, and your subscription status.
To give back your balance when you reinstall on the same phone, and to stop the welcome bonus from being claimed again by reinstalling, the app creates a random device key that stays on the phone (iOS Keychain; on Android a value derived from the app-specific Android ID). Our server stores only a one-way hash of it. The app also sends a device-integrity token — Apple DeviceCheck on iOS, Google Play Integrity on Android — and our server uses Apple's DeviceCheck to set a flag for the device that says the welcome bonus was already given. This flag contains no identity and stays with Apple even if you delete your account.
Sign in with Apple (optional, iOS). If you choose Keep tokens on a new phone, your anonymous account is linked to your Apple ID. Apple gives us a stable identifier and, if you choose to share it, an email address (which may be an Apple private relay address). We use it only to let you sign back in to the same balance.
Every request also carries a Firebase App Check token so our server can tell it comes from a genuine copy of the app.
4. Purchases and subscription
Babel Plus and token purchases are processed by Apple (App Store) or Google (Google Play). We never see your card or payment details. We use RevenueCat to verify purchases and keep the subscription status in sync; RevenueCat receives your anonymous account ID, the products you bought, their prices and dates, and the store receipt. Our server receives the same subscription events from RevenueCat to credit your tokens.
5. Analytics, crash reporting and install source (Google Firebase)
- Firebase Analytics — which screens are opened and which features are used (for example that a translation was made, which model was chosen, or that the paywall was shown), with your device type, OS and app version, language, country and a random app-instance ID. Never the text of your messages.
- Firebase Crashlytics — crash reports: the state of the app when it crashed, device model and OS version, and a random installation ID.
- Firebase Remote Config — settings we can change without an app update.
- Install source — when you first open the app we record how it was installed (an ad campaign, a store search or a web link), using Apple's AdServices framework on iOS and the Google Play Install Referrer on Android. This is a campaign identifier, not a personal one.
Babel does not use the Meta SDK, does not ask for tracking permission, and does not read your advertising identifier (IDFA / Android advertising ID). Rewarded ads are turned off: Babel shows no ads and the Google Mobile Ads (AdMob) SDK is not started. If we ever turn ads on, we will update this policy first.
6. Notifications
If you allow notifications, the app registers a Firebase Cloud Messaging token so we can send you messages such as token reminders or news about Babel. The token is tied to your random install, not to your name. You can turn notifications off at any time in your system settings.
7. What we do not do
We do not collect your name, phone number, contacts, location or photos. We do not keep the content of your chats on our servers. We show no ads, do not use advertising identifiers, do not track you across other companies' apps or websites, and never sell your data. We do not use your messages to train AI models.
8. Third-party services
Babel relies on these providers, each under their own privacy terms:
- OpenAI, Anthropic and Google (Gemini API) — generating replies, section 2.
- Google Firebase / Google Cloud (Authentication, Cloud Firestore, Cloud Functions, App Check, Analytics, Crashlytics, Remote Config, Cloud Messaging, Hosting) — sections 2, 3, 5 and 6.
- RevenueCat — purchase verification, section 4.
- Apple (App Store, DeviceCheck, Sign in with Apple, AdServices, Speech) and Google (Google Play, Play Integrity, Install Referrer) — app distribution, purchases and the features above.
9. Legal basis and your choices
If you are in the EU, the UK or Switzerland: sending your messages to an AI provider and keeping your balance and purchases are necessary to provide the app to you (Art. 6(1)(b)); sending your messages to the AI providers also rests on the consent you give when you start Babel. Analytics and crash reporting rest on our legitimate interest in understanding how the app is used and fixing it (Art. 6(1)(f)). If you are in Indonesia (UU PDP) or Malaysia (PDPA), we process your data for the same purposes, on the basis of your consent and of providing the service you asked for.
Your choices:
- Share usage data — turning it off in the app's Settings stops Google Analytics and Firebase Crashlytics on that device.
- Delete chat history — Settings › Delete chat history removes all chats from your phone.
- Delete my account — removes your account and balance from our servers (see Data Deletion).
- Notifications — turn them off in your system settings.
- Uninstall Babel — stops all collection and removes everything stored on the phone.
10. Your rights
Wherever you live, you can ask us to confirm what we hold about you, to correct it, to delete it, or to stop processing it, and you can withdraw consent at any time. You may also complain to your local data protection authority. Your chats are on your phone and already in your hands; for everything on our servers, see Data Deletion or write to the address in section 13.
California residents: we do not sell or share personal information as those terms are used in the CCPA/CPRA.
11. Retention
- Chats — on your phone until you delete them or uninstall.
- Account, balance, usage and purchase records — while your account exists; deleted when you delete your account. An empty anonymous account created by a reinstall is removed when the old account is restored.
- Conversation summaries (if conversation memory is on) — 30 days, or until you delete your account.
- Server logs — 30 days.
- Analytics and crash data — the limited retention periods set in our Firebase project, then deleted automatically.
- RevenueCat and store purchase records — kept by those services for the periods their terms and tax law require.
12. AI answers; children
AI answers can be wrong; check important information, especially for health, legal or money matters — see our Terms of Use. Babel is not directed at children under 13 (or the minimum age in your country), and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
13. Changes and contact
If this policy changes materially — for example if we start storing chats, add an AI provider or turn ads on — we will update this page and change the date above.
